Smart and Persistent Piccola Bear

Here is a video that truly illustrates the intelligence and persistence of our bear cub, Piccola.  It’s a fact that wildlife biologists rank the intelligence of bears just below that of primates, and in this video we can see that even a nine-month-old cub is good at solving a self-chosen puzzle.  You can just about see the wheels turning as she tries to determine how to get the big log out of the Cubby Pool.  She had discovered that there were tasty insects (a major protein source for bears) inside the log, and she was determined to get it out of the water so she could eat them.  Dash Bear, her enclosure mate, comes by and offers a little help, but this is mainly Piccola’s success.
