Black Bears are good at hiding, although they may not give it a thought. They evolved in forested areas, where their black fur gives them a good hiding mechanism – they simply blend into the background and unless they move, they are “invisible” to anyone passing by.

Example of “invisible” cubs – if it weren’t for the arrows. we probably wouldn’t see them at all. These cubs are on their daybed at the bottom of a tree.

The three cubs stopped into their Acclimation Pen to pick up peanuts for a late night snack. They took the peanuts outside to shell and eat them. Smart bears!

Four of the cubs in Enclosure #1 – Probably Caramel is the missing cub; she often chooses to sleep in a tree.

One wakes up and that means the others must wake up, too.

He sets out to awaken the others.

Turnip doesn’t want to get up yet.

Puddin’ won’t take no for an answer. He gives Turnip a chomp!

Turnip still resists. He definitely is ready to hibernate!

Puddin’ returns

Turnip still isn’t onboard with the idea, but Puddin’ continues his assault. Turnip did, finally go down to forage.

The cubs in Enclosure #2 are hanging out by their Acclimation Pen.

They wrestle there. Note that their Acclimation Pen is still closed, since they will be with us for another month.

Twinkle was so underweight when she arrived at ABR, she is actively and eagerly eating all that is provided. She doesn’t care for peanuts, which is odd, but she eats everything else!

Here she is, eating sliced apples. The curators continue to offer the peanuts, but aren’t too worried since she has such a good appetite.
