Cub Shenanigans

Who can understand the behavior of bear cubs? We certainly can’t! They can change their minds often, and who’s to say they shouldn’t do that?

For example, Boudreaux Bear recently became fascinated by the security cam that was installed in Acclimation Pen #4 (the better to see how the hibernation plans work out). He managed to get several selfies that are quite unique.

Watch out, camera! Boudreaux has his eye on you!

Nice profile shot!
Boudreaux is clearly curious about the device.
A good shot of the nose – like all bears, he can detect smells at great distances.
He strikes a pose for this selfie. Almost looks regal, doesn’t he?
Uh-oh! It looks like he is reaching for the camera. No, Boudreaux, don’t do it!
He turns his attention to the loft, where Jessamine is resting. She denies him admission.
Jessamine is refusing to let either Boudreaux or Beignet into the loft!
After refusing to share the loft with the LA twins, Jessamine welcomed them into her daybed, where the three spent the night.
The next morning, after sleeping nearly 15 hours, Beignet and Boudreaux got up and left the daybed.
Boudreaux did a stretching exercise. Look how tall he is!
Boudreaux moves off, and Beignet follows him.
Jessamine stayed in bed for another half hour.

Observation of these three bear cubs at this particular time of year is yielding much information. Although we can’t deduce that this is typical of bears nearing hibernation, it does give us some insight into their level of activity and their relative sleep vs wakeful time. What will we learn next?
