Bud Bear is Still With Us

After the releases of all ten of the COYs (Cubs of the Year) from ABR, we now have just one resident – Bud Bear, our yearling, who was injured by a car and had a broken front leg that was repaired at UTCVM. You may recall that when he returned to the vet school his leg was almost completely healed, but he had to endure the extraction of three teeth, due to his eating of human garbage before his rescue.

Bud has been recuperating from the dental surgery, while on soft foods until very recently. He has also been given antibiotics, which are delivered in yogurt laced with honey. He is still in the Hartley House, and we’ll see how he’s doing there.

Bud sleeos all night. It helps that this is the time of year when bears are slowing down, in preparation for hibernation.
He sleeps soundly. He has been a model patient.
He has almost finished his course of antibiotics.
After he’s done with the meds, he will be observed in Hartley House for a few days.
Hopefully, he will then have a few days in a Wild Enclosure, for the curators to observe how he does outside after all this time.
Bud seems to be content sleeping on the bed or on the floor.
We especially like this “tree-hugger” pose.
He has a late night snack of the honey log, provided by Curator Coy.
The last day of his meds! He waits at the door, probably wanting to get in and tip over his water dish!

It will be interesting to watch Bud Bear for the rest of his stay at ABR. Stay tuned to see how soon he gets to go outside, and how he reacts to the out-of-doors again!
