We thought that nine cubs would be our “full house” for 2023, but we were mistaken. On August 1st homeowners in Sevier County observed two small cubs playing alone in their yard, and later found a dead sow near the road. They reported it to TWRA, and the female was taken to UTCVM for a necropsy. TWRA Biologist Janelle and ABR Curator Tom took traps to the location and were able to trap the two cubs. The cubs, both males, were transported to UTCVM for their exams.

Both cubs are healthy. Cub #381 weighs 23.1 pounds and #382 weighs 22 pounds, good weights for 6-month-old cubs. Their mom had done a good job. Bear #381 is nicknamed Cricket; #382 is nicknamed Sprout. Now our cubby population is 11!

Two brothers – Cricket and Sprout Bear at their rescue.
