Little Benji

Benji was one of the most recent arrivals.

He, along with Garland, were in a convalescent pen but on December 23 he moved into the Wild Side Crib with Lucy and her gang.  He still looks pretty rough (the white on his belly is not white fur, but is hair loss, due to nutritional deficiencies.

New fur is coming in as he eats more healthy food. He loves his new home and spends a lot of time in the tree.

In the other photo Lucy is interacting with Benji.

It almost looks as though she is scolding him for being so high up in the tree.

It continues to amaze us that female cubs will assume a mothering role even though they are so young and still in need of mothering themselves. Mothering is obviously an instinctive behavior in sow bears.
