Our two little female cubs, Tinsel and Twinkle Bear, have adjusted, sort of, to their shared living space. They still are not best friends, by any means, but they are not mortal enemies, either, For the time being they are putting up with each other, and at times they are even close together. Like on nights when the temperature plunges.
They still do their “tree dance,” showing that they are not yet comfortable with another bear in their space.
However, on these frigid nights, they share the same den. Since it is open on both ends, they don’t have to be too tightly snuggled. The yellow arrow points to Tinsel, and the red one shows us Twinkle.
Tinsel is inside, and Twinkle sits on the top of the culvert.
In the morning, Twinkle was the first to get up and out.
Tinsel was not far behind.
Both The Cub Tub and The Cubby Pool are frozen solid!
The solid surface had intrigued them, but now Twinkle wants a drink!
Oh no! Even the Cub Tub is frozen over! How will she get a drink?
Kamryn and Tom were on ice-breaker duty. They entered the enclosure with tools like an axe and a sledgehammer.
The Cub Tub was a bigger challenge. It is smaller and the ice was thicker.
As usual, the cubs scurried up a tree as soon as the curators entered. It’s interesting that they are in the same tree, though on different branches. They spent much of the day there, even after the curators left. Good bears!
Eventually, the cubs came down to forage and drink. It may be necessary for the curators to break up the ice again, as the cold will be in place for a few more days.
