On Saturday, March 3rd, our 16th yearling cub of 2012 was admitted to ABR.
She, like most of the recent arrivals, is very small for a 1-year-old. We don’t know the weight just yet but will let you know when we find out.
Notice that she has a number of ticks on her ear. This seems unusual, as ticks are generally dormant in the winter. However, it’s been an unusually warm winter so apparently ticks are active already.
Ticks are a nuisance to bears of all ages and we can only hope that seeing them now doesn’t forecast a bad year for wildlife and humans who are out in the woods this summer.
As for little Amethyst — ticks generally fall off by themselves but it is possible that our curator will remove these so they don’t migrate to another bear when she is placed with buddies.
