We read an interesting article in the Mansfield, Ohio News Journal that relates sightings of animals that have not been seen in the state for about 100 years. The article says this about the return of black bears:
“Black bears are coming back, too, with more than 150 sightings in 2010. There were confirmed sightings in 23 counties last year, involving an estimated 31 bears.
Most sightings occurred in northeastern and south-central counties, with Athens and Portage counties leading the state reporting 13 sightings each. Most sightings involved young male bears, but there were eight reported sightings of sows with cubs and two sightings of lone cubs.
Where are they coming from? Other than those born here, the bears are invading from Pennsylvania and West Virginia, two states that have an estimated 20,000 black bears between them.”
