On April 7, 2009 each second grade class at Fairview Elementary School in Maryville, TN adopted an ABR bear cub. Two volunteers visited the school and presented a short program, telling the children about ABR’s newly arrived cubs. Each class wanted to adopt a cub, by raising money to help feed it. It was suggested that they earn money by doing chores for family and friends, and collecting it in banks made from their milk cartons. The ABR volunteers gave each class a photo of one of the cubs, and an Adoption Certificate, with the cub’s name to be filled in after the children voted on a name. Two weeks were allowed for the project.
On April 24th the volunteers returned to learn the names of the cubs (Arthur, Lexi, Mo, and Blackie). Each class presented the money collected by their class. The total for the four classes was a whopping $438.87! As a thank-you to the children, the volunteers played “Gummy Bear Bingo” with each class.
Fairview School is participating in a conference for SEE (Schools Exceeding Expectations) which is part of the HET (Highly Effective Teaching) program. ABR is honored that the second grade teachers chose our Adopt-a-Bear program as their service project to highlight in a display for the conference. Here is a photo of their eye-catching display.
