This is proving to be an unusual year for Appalachian Bear Rescue. On August 7th, we received two more orphaned cubs. Cub #213, nicknamed Ellis Bear, and his brother Cub #214, nicknamed Charley B. Bear, came to us from an Eastern Tennessee county north of us. As is so often the case, we do not know how they came to be orphaned. They are healthy and of good size for wild cubs of their age (6 months). Ellis weighed in at 32 pounds; Charley B. weighed 27 on admittance.
After a short time in an acclimation pen for observation, the two cubs were released into the same Wild Enclosure where Summer, Juliette, Pansy, Petal, and Peanut are residing. Here are photos taken when they were released into that enclosure.
Not surprisingly, the two cubs climbed the nearest tree right away.
As we’ve so often said, a bear cub feels safest when in a tree. The two brothers headed for where they would feel safe in this new environment.
The day had been stressful for them. Now they felt safe enough to take a much-needed rest in the tree.
Charley B. wasn’t quite ready for a nap. From his vantage point in the tree he surveyed the surroundings.
We can’t help but wonder if any more cubs will need our help this year.
