Just when the curators thought that the frenzied eating of hyperphagia was over, the cubs seem to be ravenous again – this time for fruit. Apples, pears and grapes are the top choices after a week or more pigging out on acorns and other nuts. For a reason known only to the cubs, their attention has now turned to the fruits.
In preparation for the release back into the wild in a few weeks, the curators are leaving the door to the Acclimation Pen open and have been putting some of the food inside the pen. It is hoped that as the cubs get used to entering the pen for treats they will be easier to trap without undue stress to bears or curators. The cubs are getting used to wandering in and out.
We are glad that the cubs have done so well at “chubbifying.” It will be most interesting to learn what their weights are when they are worked up for release!
