We are very sad to report that little Crockett Bear, who just joined the other cubs in Hartley House, was humanely euthanized yesterday at the UTCVM. Curator Seth took Crockett back to the university vet school for a follow-up visit, to check his liver values that were elevated at his initial exam.

It was hoped that there would be improvement, since his heavy parasite load had been eliminated and he appeared to have gained weight. Indeed, Crockett had doubled his weight since arrival, and his body condition was much improved. However, the bloodwork showed that his liver values were far worse than before. The doctors took him to radiology and investigated further with an ultrasound and a CT scan. It was learned that his liver and the pathways to and from it were not formed correctly, a genetic problem with no cure. He was not able to properly break down fats, which was why he was so emaciated at intake. The improvement during his time at ABR was temporary and his liver would continue to deteriorate, After conferring with TWRA, the agency responsible for Crockett, and with ABR, the difficult decision was made and the cub was euthanized.

This was the first time the doctors had seen this condition in a black bear, but they will use the results of his tests and CT scan to  document his case with the hope of helping other bears in the future.

It is heartbreaking to lose a cub like this, and we are all saddened. But we can take comfort in the fact that he had safety, warmth, and caring during his final days. Rest in Peace, Crockett Bear!
