The 6th annual Mountain Wildlife Days in Sapphire, NC was held on July 16-18, 2009 at the Sapphire Valley Resort. ABR volunteers presented a program, “Getting to know black bears through hands-on activities” for a group of 20 children as well as adult observers. Fun was had by all. There was also a table showcasing ABR in the Exhibit Hall, where visitors could learn about ABR and have their bear questions answered.
Other events during the weekend included guided hikes, an owl prowl, a Bluegrass music program, audio-visual programs about various wildlife, live animal presentations with wolves and raptors, and a children’s program about birds.
The theme of this year’s event was to address “nature deficit disorder” in children (and adults) and getting children involved in the wonders of nature. The event was well attended and audiences were enthusiastic. Since this is an annual event, be sure to watch for it during July 2010.
