Curator Coy decided to test the cubs’ food preferences. He scattered sawtooth acorns, peanuts, grapes, pears, apples, and chestnuts in different areas of the enclosures, wondering what would attract them first. Every cub went for the chestnuts first, and after crunching on them, moved on to other foods in no particular order.
The loss of the American chestnut due to a blight over a hundred years ago dealt a blow to bears and other wildlife. Chestnuts were the most important food for one and all. Hopefully the scientists who are working to develop a resistant chestnut will eventually be successful. Cubs just know that they are good to eat!
There is always something going on that makes us chuckle at the antics of these little furballs. They are certainly growing!
