Our injured yearling, Little Bit, is quite the wild little bear ! Even though she came to us 3 weeks ago, weighing only 13 pounds, you’d never know that to see her now! She was introduced to a large cage inside the Cubby Nursery, to be protected from any further injury to her snout, and to keep her in a cool, bug-free atmosphere. We have reported that she was eating well, and that trend has continued. In fact, Curator Rick tells us that she has outgrown the small, culvert “den” that is inside the cage. At first, she spent a lot of time in her cozy “den,” but now she can’t even turn around inside it. If she goes inside, she has to back out!
Here is a photo of the ingenious system that Rick devised to keep her in one end of the cage while he cleans out the other end and replaces her food. This task is not easy, and often takes him an hour or more, while she huffs and shows her wild nature.
It may seem that she is too confined, but please remember that she was badly injured, with a raw wound that must be allowed to heal. Here is a recent photo of our little wild one, who is getting bigger and more rambuncitious by the day. If only she would stop scratching the scab off!
