We came across this article about the first bear ever seen on Sanibel Island, a popular tourist destination on the west coast of Florida.  A remote camera captured the image of the young bear, probably a yearling that was recently dispersed by its mother, in a well-known wildlife refuge on the island.  Speculation is that the bear swam to Sanibel from the mainland or from another, nearby island.  Bears are very good swimmers, so the distance of approximately 2 miles would be no problem for the bear.  It will be interesting to see how long this bear stays put on Sanibel.
