The three cubs are gaining weight, which is just what we want them to do. They are good eaters, and the curators provide their favorite food items as much as possible. These photos were taken from behind the blind that surrounds the acclimation pen, which is why they look cropped. We can get the idea, even so.
The bowl contains frozen “formula pops” as well as bear chow and fruits. Grapes are a favorite.
The formula, which is Fox Valley Bear Milk Replacer, is mixed with rice baby cereal. It is rich with fat (like a mother bear’s milk) and hearty. They aren’t ready to give up their formula yet, but they will have to transition to solid food before they can be released into the Wild Enclosure.
By providing more bowls of formula, the curators manage to reduce the fighting over any particular bowl.
