Because they are flat-footed, like humans, they can do this easily. Even adult bears will stand erect at times. Unfortunately, many people think that when a bear stands up it is getting ready to charge, but this is not true. Usually, when a bear stands up it is trying to get a better sense of something that it saw, smelled, or heard.
