That is absolutely wonderful! I am so happy Peeps has friends. It makes my heart smile. I got my new Momma Bear shirt yesterday. I love it. It is adorable 💞🐻💞

Yay, Peeps has buddies!!

Hurray for Peeps and the boisterous boys! I’m so glad she’s overcome her initial fear of them and has two fun brothers to play with! God Bless Curator Tom for always taking the lead on “all things cubbie”. I think Peeps will outperform Viola on the swingy ball 😉

Bless her heart, so thrilled she had fun with the swingy ball and was able to climb up to the hammock branches. Those little back legs got a workout playing with the swingy ball. ♥️ I’m also relieved that her meeting with the bruisers went much better this time. Hopefully they will continue to be best friends forever. ♥️ The best part is she isn’t alone and they can snuggle together while sleeping. ♥️🐻♥️

Wonderful news. So happy they are doing friends. Great news. Peeps needed company but on her terms. That swingy ball is the best. Their tree stuff is great. Thank you ABR..❤️💙💜💛💚

What a forested palace she has, I love Peeps, I love her name! Play nice!

Maybe Peeps was just taken aback at these strangers suddenly coming into her space. Now they have all been introduced to a new space at the same time. Looks to be working out quite well. ABR you are amazing. You never give up on new ideas for the betterment of the bears! 🙏🏻🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️

The yellow swingy ball! Reminds me of Cranbeary and Viola - the two best wrecking ball swingers. So glad they're all together now. And then Tots to even things out when she's ready. What a great playroom!

Awwww, that's great things are working out for them🐻❤🐻❤🐻❤👏👏👏, that was good you let Peeps investigate the room first then she felt comfy when the boys came in...Thank you for the happy update and video, Have a wonderful night😴🙏🏻

This is awesome news!! So happy for Peeps. Now let the mayhem begin. Can’t wait to watch these three together.♥️🐻🐾

How wonderful, you go little Peeps just knew it had to be on your terms and your time for everything to work out. You are the sweetest little ball playing cubbie around.❤🐻

Hooray! Good little bruiser bears. The curators did an awesome job of ‘decorating’.

So happy that Peeps has more room and friends to share it with ❤️❤️ Let the fun begin 🤣

Such great news! Another cub trio to give the curators more grey hairs! 😀

This brings such Happiness and Joy to my Heart♥️ Bless all of you who care for these precious orphans🧸🧸🧸

Some good adjustments today 👏👏

Awww good job brave girl

It's like the swingy ball is what's been missing in her life..:).

Wonderful news!!

What a wonderful play area you created for the three littles. Peeps especially seems so delighted.

So happy for the bears!!! ❤️

Way to go Peeps!! Now you have some playmates. Have fun little ones!! 🐾🐾🐾❤️❤️❤️

Sweet babies…it makes my heart happy to see Peeps with friends aka The Bruiser Brothers 🐻💙🐻💙🐻🩷

Thanks, curators for putting your thinking caps on and thinking like a cubby. Yay! It worked!!

So happy they are happy together now 💖🐻💖

ABR Daily Update-April 29, 2024-Cubs’ Progress 🐻

Weather: 81F (27C) Humidity 35%, Sunny 🌞

The curators reintroduced Shadow and Casper to Peeps yesterday afternoon and again this morning. The Bruiser Brothers mean Peeps no harm; they’re just bubbly, bumbling little guys who just want to play. Last night, Peeps got brave enough to leave her corner for a moment but was overwhelmed by their goofy good nature. The cubs are separated again, and the curators might try another introduction today or tomorrow.

A few of our friends suggested Peeps move in with Tots, a perfect solution, except Tots isn’t allowed to wrestle while her arm heals, and cubs will wrestle whether they should or not. Tots continues to do well; we would love to rush her convalescence, but we must be patient and hope she will be too. Daisy Mae, Duke, and Jellybean are in and out of their rooms all day. They need to burn off all that cubby energy so they can consume more calories to burn more energy so they can consume more calories…

The cubs are seeing new items on their menu: mushed blueberries, raspberries, chopped grapes, and some mealworms, as well as their usual Cubby Porridge and Cubby Sauce (a puree of apples and berries). The cubs have to transition to a solid food-only diet before they can be released into a wild enclosure (cubby porridge doesn’t scatter well). In the wild, they would still be nursing from their mothers, but we have to wean them much earlier to minimize the risk of their habituating to humans. All our cubs now have temporary ear tags so we’ll know who is where when it comes time to let them outside. The curators couldn’t weigh Jellybean; he’s now too big for just light immobilization, and they didn’t want to sedate him just to check his weight. We expect he’s about 15-20 pounds.

Work at the facility never stops: the curators are busy getting the wild enclosures ready. You might like to know that Twinkle and Tinsel, the last residents in Enclosure #4, successfully chewed through the spigot supplying water to the Cubby Pool. Well done, girls! We wish you all the best out there! The curators are also building (weaving?) a new firehose hammock for the Acclimation Pen attached to the Recovery Center. If all goes well, Peeps and The Bruiser Brothers will have something fun to play on when they go out.

Is there a way to introduce Shadow and Casper one at a time?

I love these updates. I hope the boys calm down some or Peeps just joins right in with their wildness ❤🐻❤

Maybe put one cub in with Peeps then change it up the next day or two. Seems both boys are too much for her at once until she finds her best big bear behavior.

Finally got my monthly donation going again! It’s the only expense I’m grateful to have!!! I love all these little bears!!! 💫❤️🧸🐻🧸❤️💫

Thank you for the updates. Bruiser Brothers, 🙂 :), Good name for them.

Thanks Ben for cracking me up again! I’m laughing at the image of Curators trying to scatter Cubby porridge through the enclosures! 😝😂 I don’t think it’s been tried at Bear With Us either!

A good report they will get it together one day and all will be happy hopefully. Thank you ABR❤️💙

Peeps is such a baby girl, it may be best to leave her solo for a big longer. The boys are apparently, just much too much!! She is doing well and can use the extra time to gain coordination and muscle strength before she runs with the bigger boys!

So much info to digest today. You really need to be a cub psychologist to figure out a seamless introduction between Peeps and Shadow and Casper. The boys are just being boys. Maybe doing just the short sessions for a while will do the trick. Glad to see that little Tots continues to do well and is content with her current situation. It would seem that Twinkle and Tinsel wanted to leave something for the curators to remember them by. It seems that they succeeded 😂. 🙏🏻🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️

In humans some little boys are just too rowdy for little girls too, I hope eventually everything will work out and she won't be so afraid, she's been thru a lot, she needs a hug❤🐻 I always look forward to these updates, Thank you for everything you do for these and all the cubs❤🐻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thank y’all for the update! Oh my cubby business is messy business! Thank y’all for all that you do for our precious bears 💕💕

Absolutely love these daily post!!!! If it were not for the ABR team and y’all’s work we’d never get to watch these precious little cubs grow up to be Big Bears!!!! Thank you so much!!!

ABR: Thanks for the link on the Alabama Bear Study.

You all sure have your hands full with these cubbies. Hopefully the brothers will calm down a bit and little Peeps will finally get a chance to meet them peacefully. Tots is so tiny but recovering well and hopefully soon will have some playmates. Thank you all at ABR for fixing everything and taking great care of these cubbies! ❤

We stopped by the ABR visitors center for the first time today! Came out with some neat goodies. It was really fun and the worker (I failed to get her name) was so fun and engaging to talk to. We will definitely be back next trip!! Can't wait to wear my t-shirt with the cubs paw prints!!

Thanks for the Alabama Black Bear Project link! Interesting reading!

I love your daily descriptions of "the kids". Full of mischief all of them.

Thank you all at ABR for all you are doing for these precious little ones and keeping us all updated on how they are doing❤️❤️

Wonderful pics with this update! Cubs will be cubs!!

Good one Ben! Thanks for the update!

The bears' menu always sounds way better than my own. (Except maybe for the mealworms.) ♥️

Looks like according to size Peeps and Tots would be a perfect pair now if only Tots leg would heal quicker.

Twinkle and Tinsel wanted you to remember them

Those ungrateful cubs always have to break something or tear something up, don't they?! Oh well, it gives the Curators something to do in their spare time! HA!! Spare time!!

Thank you ABR and cubbies 🇬🇧xxxx🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻

ABR Daily Update-April 28, 2024-When Cubs Meet 🐻🐻🐻

Weather: 80F (27C) Humidity 40%, Mostly Sunny 🌤️

Yesterday, the curators introduced siblings Shadow and Casper to their next-door neighbor, Peeps Bear. We’d like to say it was a polite and cordial meeting, but bear cubs have no manners, and these boys seem to be especially gifted in the terrible etiquette department. They entered Peeps' room, barely acknowledged her, ate her food, played with her toys, destroyed her log, and left. Then they came back and did it all again! Peeps was forced into a corner! Nobody puts Peeps in a corner! 🧸

After the boys left (the second time), the curators closed the gate between rooms to give everyone an overnight break. Peeps wrestled with Baby Not a Polar Bear, probably doing to it what she wished she could have done to the Bruiser Brothers. It’s interesting to note not one of the cubs uttered a sound during their introduction. Little bears are very quiet; they know that noise draws attention, something they don’t want in the wild. They only cry when they’re very hungry or very scared. The curators will try introducing them again later today. Rest assured that no meeting between heads of state has ever had as many eyes focused on it. There are hands on the door, ready to intervene at the first sign of trouble.

Our other cubs are doing well. Tots really does enjoy the space in Hartley House, and her appetite and plumbing are functioning well. Daisy Mae, Duke, and Jellybean are as self-absorbed as they were yesterday; it’s all climbing, playing, eating, and sleeping. We wouldn’t want it any other way.

We’re often in contact with wildlife agencies in other states, especially those who’ve sent bear cubs to us in the past. Traci Wood, Bear Biologist with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, called to inform us of a bear study they’ve been conducting trying to determine why the cub mortality rate in the south Alabama bear population is so high (about 70%) and why female bears in southern Alabama produce so few cubs, often only one per cycle. She also gave us good news about a former resident: Aubie Bear. Aubie and her brother, Big Al, arrived at ABR on March 9, 2021. They were with us only until Alabama wildlife could find suitable foster mothers for them. Aubie and Big Al left ABR on March 15, 2022, fostered to different families in Alabama. Aubie, the female, was GPS collared, and after she separated naturally from her foster mother, she traveled for miles up to the northern part of the state. Traci checked on Aubie a while back to see if she’d had cubs. She didn’t have cubs this year, but we’re thrilled to know Aubie survived. The black bear population is faring better in northern Alabama, so Aubie’s GPS collar was removed. We wish Aubie a long and happy life.🐻❤️🤞

Does anyone know how the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources would get the data to determine the very high mortality rates of little cubs and low fertility rate in adult females in southern Alabama? Thanks ABR for the information about and photos of the 3 little Alabama cubs and the good news about Aubie Bear.

Thank you all for everything you do. Did you ever get a phone call about the poor cubs that was handle with by humans in Asheville. They had been on the news because of the video take by someone showing the people handling the bears . One was found and hurt. Never found the other cub.

Obviously the Bruiser Brothees have no manners and really don’t care, lol, I think Peeps will tuck this memory away, for now, she’ll get them when they least expect it 😊. Has there ever been a time when you have introduced the cubs that you have had to intervene? It seems things usually go smoothly, just wondering. 😊

Does peeps bear have her arm shaved? Or is that a stuffed toy I’m looking at?

Can you share how far north Aubie traveled?

Thank you for moderating the Peeps Talks. Very reassuring to know you're a step away, should there be dissention among participants 🙂❤

Have you ever had any news about Hartley? 🐻

Lots of interesting information today!!! Poor little Peeps!! 🥲. Grow strong little Peeps and defend your territory and your toys!!! 🧸. Loving all these bears!!!! ❤️🐻s

Good report as far as the eating & pooping. Seems the trio is doing well in their rooms. Tots is doing well & I pray she heals well. Shadow & Casper are bad boys. They should be nice all of them lost Mom. I hope Peeps knocks them off her log & teaches them a lesson. Boys always have to be hot shots. Thank you ABR for watching for abuse. You do such great jobs & we appreciate you. 😊😊💙💙💙💙💜💜💜

In reference to the Alabama bears: what area was Aubie released in and do you know where she was located when gps removed?

Poor little Peeps, I hope the boys get their manners in check and are much nicer and friendlier to Peeps ❤🤞🤞she needs to set them straight she's no pushover 😉😊🐻 I'm glad Tots is loving the bigger room❤🐻 Thank you all for everything you do, thank you for the update and pictures ❤🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻❤

Very very insightful post today! Aubie looks great! 🎉🎉🎉. Now to just get these cubby brothers and Peeps on the same page! 😂🙏🙏

Glad to hear all our cubbies are doing well❤️❤️❤️ love all the updates that you give us on how they are progressing it is always appreciated as is all you do for them to give them their best lives without you they wouldn't have had a chance to grow up

It must be fascinating to watch these baby bears. So happy to read that Tots is doing so well. A real testament to the love and dedication all of you have for these precious creations. 😍

What an amazing update! Thank you a thousand times for everything you do.

I live in south Alabama (along the gulf coast). There is a lot of destruction of habitat here because of housing boom. My assumption is that plays a large part of reduced population growth of the bears. It really breaks my heart

Bonus update today! How cool of them to share about Aubie. Looking like a big healthy bear!

I love the updates that you give about all the younguns!!

Poor Peeps! Hopefully they will get along soon. 🤞🤞 So glad Tots is doing well. Prayers that she will heal quickly. Daisy Mae, Duke and Jellybean seem to be fully enjoying their life. Thank you all for the great job y’all are doing for these precious little ones.

Thank you Alabama Wildlife for the great news about Aubie and hope she has a long life. Hope Big Al is enjoying being a wild bear.

So happy to hear about Aubie. I often wonder about our cubbies when they leave.

There’s no accounting for the poor manners of neighboring cubs, Peeps bear. Be brave, little 🐻! ❤️🙌😊

Brilliant update ,thankyou. I'm sure that in a few weeks we'll hear that Peeps has got her own back on the boys, she's just playing it cool. For now. 😏

How wonderful Aubie is doing well!! I have been following ABR since 2015 when the terrible mast failure happened and you guys were taking care of cubs that were starving. Poor Peeps.

Glad all the cubs get along so great

ABR Daily Update-April 27, 2024, Musical Bears 🐻

Weather: 73F (23C) Humidity 55%, Partly Cloudy 🌤️

The seven cubs currently in residence at ABR are doing well. Tots, our most recent arrival, is recuperating from surgery to repair a broken humerus in her left arm. She needs time alone to heal and take her meds. However, ferocious Tots let the curators know she wanted OUT of The Cub Nursery…NOW… and they had to respond... immediately!

The curators played a quick game of “musical bears”, shifting our little cubs from one building to another. They scrambled to get one of the rooms in Hartley House ready for Tots, and to move Shadow and Casper from Hartley House into room #2 of The Recovery Center. The boys don’t know it yet, but they need a little sister named Peeps, and isn’t it grand we have one living next door? Well, kind of next door... the curators raised the gate between the rooms but the cubs aren't interested in meeting yet.

Daisy Mae, Duke, and Jellybean were not included in this round of “musical bears”. They still occupy room #3 of Hartley House and the adjoining acclimation pen. They are oblivious to anyone who won’t wrestle or anything that isn’t food. Just so you know. 🐻🐻🐻

The cubs (except for Tots and Peeps) had mealworms, raspberries, and blueberries added to their regular menu of Cubby Porridge. The two littlest girls get cubby beary sauce and Gerber baby puffs added to their Porridge. The cubs haven’t sent anything back to the kitchen yet, so we assume they’re enjoying their meals.

ABR was thrilled to be invited to be a beneficiary of Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day in Gatlinburg last week. The staff couldn’t have been kinder or more accommodating. We raised $1,100 to chubbify our furry residents. We’re grateful to all who participated.

Appalachian Bear Rescue This is good news that Tots needs more room. Will she get to join Peeps, Casper and Shadow when she can get around better? She needs siblings too.

Thank you for the update! I’m glad all of our precious babies are doing well! 💕💕

So glad everyone is happy with their accomodations. We don't want any cubbies to have to get an attorney. ABR has always done what was needed to take care of their requests. They are in good hands. So glad they are all doing well & seem to be happy. I think maybe Tots is going to be the boss of her rooms. They are all so cute. So glad they are eating well. Thank you ABR for taking care of the cubbies. 💙💙❤️💙💙❤️❤️

So happy for these little bears💖

Enjoying these good news days!

Things seem to be going well with all of the cubs. I wonder if the curators have a spread sheet to go by telling which bears need to be where at what time, so the curators can get whatever is needed to be taken care of done 😬. So glad to see that the Littles, Peeps and Tots, are doing well in their newer accommodations. Great job curators, as always! 🙏🏻🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️

I truly miss Twinkle and Tinsel 🥲But happy they have survived and back in their proper surroundings 🥰

Well it's very clear who the bosses are at ABR and it isn't the Curators. 😉

Always glad to hear all is well at ABR. 🐻🐻🐻🤎

I am absolutely enchanted by those babies! Also. I will buy some Ben and Jerry's next shopping trip. 🐻 🐻 🐻 🐻 🐻 🐻 🐻 🍦 💕

With all the rooms occupied by different bears, how do you get the rooms cleaned 😬

I wasn’t aware of the AP’s attached to the RC 😊

I LOVE seeing them standing upright and bashing each other about!😂

ABR seems to react to every new challenge very well ♥️

Hello! (From Michigan)

Thank you so much Curator Tori. Have a great weekend everyone 🐻🥰

Hello all! Happy Friday!

How long do they usually play before they nap? It seems like perpetual motion until they just drop!

Thank you Curator Tori

Looks like Daisy Mae, Duke & Jellybean are soon ready for outside?

In these parts, we call that “fruit basket shuffle” 😂

Thank you Curator Tori

Congratulations to Tots on the new digs!

I can just imagine a stuck bad leg with Tots trying to climb ♥️

Peeps is a little doll baby 🥰

The Rowdy boys lol

Mama Bears...we salute you!

Is there a time that they are all asleep or is at least one awake all the time?

April 25, 2024: Did You Know?

Did you know that the Appalachian Bear Rescue Mission is bigger than taking care of injured and orphaned young bears to return them to the wild?

ABR cares for orphaned and injured black bear cubs for return to their natural wild habitat; increases public awareness about coexisting with black bears; and studies all aspects of returning cubs to the wild.
As part of our efforts to increase public awareness about coexisting with black bears. back in 2020, ABR signed an agreement to serve as Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency's BearWise Tennessee Partner. We work with folks in our communities...individuals, homeowners' associations, businesses, cities, counties, etc. to promote the BearWise Basics and help keep people and bears safe.

Last year, our ABR volunteers and staff members worked together to assemble 1,000 retro-fit trash can strap kits. Each kit contains four straps and instructions to install the kits on flip-top trash cans. The kits may not keep every bear out of the trash every time, but they are a terrific deterrent and work most of the time.

This week the TWRA and ABR teams are working together to install the strap kits on cans in a subdivision in the City of Sevierville. A group of Amazon.com operations managers from around the state of Tennessee joined us on Monday to kick off the week. We went door-to-door delivering door hangers with information about the project. Homeowners were asked to leave their can at the street on Wednesday and Thursday and our teams would come by and install the kits. Yesterday, Curators Haley and Katrina and ABR Volunteer Ann joined TWRA Biologists Janelle and Dan to go can to can and install the kits. By the end of the day, more than 50 cans were more protected! The team is back out there today working on more cans and KEEPING PEOPLE AND BEARS SAFE!

We sometimes refer to unsecured human trash and birdseed as "gateway drugs" for bears. It may not seem like a big deal if a bear gets your birdseed or trash. Maybe you even take action and secure your trash and remove your bird feeders. But the bear has already learned a lesson. There's FOOD in those cans and feeders. And now, the bear has been brave enough to get that food reward. Even if you remove the temptation from your yard, the bear's bravery will grow. It will try every can and every feeder in the neighborhood. It doesn't take a long time and humans and the bear are in trouble.

Our cubs are doing well today. We provided the doctors at UTCVM a report on Tots Bear late yesterday. She's putting weight on her repaired arm. She still favors it some, but the bottom of her paw is firmly on the ground when she uses the leg. That's just what the doctors wanted to hear! The six other bears at ABR had their breakfast earlier this morning and are off and running.

Thank you for keeping our bears in your heart! Thank you for supporting our mission! We couldn't do our work with YOU!

Is there a place in upstate NY that can acquire these? I've seen a lot of posts on FB in my area about bears getting into garbage cans that are unsecured and worried people will shoot first and then ask questions😞

Can we order these straps for our cans?

Very important work! Thank you for taking care of the cubs and spreading awareness of how to keep all bears safe through community outreach. Each and every one of you are nothing short of ursine saints! 🩵🐻

Thank you to everyone involved. I wish I lived closer so I could volunteer ❤🐻❤

Everything that Melanie Davis Lanham said! You are amazing at what you do ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ Glad to see that Tots is not favoring her injured leg. Peeps is just the cutest little baby ever. Love all of our current residents 🙏🏻🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️

ABR you are awesome, fantastic, treasures, awe-inspiring, incredible and I could go on and on…..thank you for all you do

Love the proactive measures you do along with educating those that live in the communities where bear resides and the general public! Thank you ABR for all you do to protect the bear population in so many ways.❤️

Great prevention work. We won't know how many bears were saved, but we know it's going to save some! Hopefully word will spread about the straps as an inexpensive easy step homeowners can take for their own sakes as well as the bears.

they ripped a hole in the side of our trashcan, we now keep it in our porch or garage

Thanks to all for this important work! Glad to hear all the cubbies are doing well . ❤️🐻

One taste of heroine on the lips forever a danger for all wildlife anyone that had social media should already know this but glad you’re making progress !

Fabulous work ABR in getting so many trash cans secured and thus bear-proof. I do hope others will follow your lead and make their rubbish bins bear-proof.

When will the 5 cubs in Hartley House (not counting Peeps) move to an enclosure?

So grateful for all you do at ABR! 🙏🏼🤗❤️🤗🙏🏼

I love the work y'all do!

It has been just a year since I discovered this group and I’m hooked! I can’t wait to see what comes next.

I got to see the trash strap kits being made at ABR last year. Awesome job on all you do

Awesome organisation- caring and proactive

Glad to hear about tots. She’s going to recover well there.

Awesome job!

Should we just not have bird feeders out at all or maybe take them in at night ?

Great to see Tots doing well. My wife and I were the ones who found her in Big South Fork initially and reported it to the rangers. Thanks for everything that you guys do.

I love their little legs!

Hello from Minnesota!

Happy Wednesday everyone!

It seems like when she is awake she is going nonstop ♥️

Hello everyone!

How are you going to eartag all the cubs that aren't tagged yet?

Loved Thumper Bear!

Peeps is a handful that will rule all the cubs in her enclosure! I love her spunkiness

Good afternoon from Wautoma Wisconsin!

Does Tots go back for a recheck soon?

And as always a reminder THANK YOU ABR 🐻❤️ very much appreciate your work 💪

Little tornado Peeps 🥰

They seem to love the swing 🥰

I got in!

Jelly has a Belly!!!

Good afternoon!

Someone is trying to cheat, using the swing as leverage 😂

Thank you curator Tori!

And the final weight before release day weight!

Jellybean reminds me of Thumper bear. The elephant cub. God rest his soul. 😔

She’s like my kitten: plays hard then conks out to sleep

Miss Delaney is laying in my lap listening to the recorded birds sing

I adopted Daisy Mae and Duke!

All that energy, look at them 😆
