Late yesterday afternoon, the sibling of our most recent rescued cub, Scruffy, was captured near the body of their late mother. You will remember that she was killed by a vehicle on the winding road between Townsend and Maryville. Scruffy (ABR #423) was rescued a couple of days ago, and it was hoped that the other cub could be rescued, also, but it was a dicey proposition. We’re glad to say that luck was with that little cub, and Scruffy’s brother was rescued and spent the night with him in Hartley House. His nickname is Rags.
Rags is slightly anemic and has a small wound on his back for which he is receiving antibiotics. He is also receiving the usual deworming medication. He weighs less than Scruffy, at 9.24 pounds. He is a very small cub for an eight-month-old, but we will no doubt see him put on weight quickly, once he is able to eat regular meals. For now, the curators are being very cautious, giving him frequent, small meals to avoid refeeding syndrome. Interesting to note that both of the cubs are eating acorns and peanuts, but aren’t interested in fruit.
Rags Bear looks like a much younger cub.
Stay tuned for the ongoing story of these two brothers as well as the other twenty-six cubs out in the Wild Enclosures!
