As you probably know, ABR has admitted an unusually large number of cubs in the past week. Today, we’ll update you on their arrival and current living arrangements.
Special Sauce Bear (aka Saucy) is the fourth cub from the family that were dubbed the Gatlinburghers. She led would-be rescuers on a merry chase for almost a month! When finally caught, she huffed and blew to show her displeasure.
At UTCVM, she weighed 20.94 pounds, juat about what her siblings weighed on admittance. She was surviving, but not thriving.
Like her sisters, she has a white blaze that actually helped officers to recognize and rescue her. Mac, the male sibling, does not have one,
Her health is OK. She has white paint on her face from sometime before rescue.
This photo from before her capture show the white paint.
At UTCVM, some of her fur was shaved to get rid of the paint.
She is in the Acclimation Pen that adjoins her siblings’ enclosure. When she finishes her deworming meds she will rejoin them.
Her first night was rough, but she is calming down as she gets used to it and is eating well.
The cubs came to check out the newbie. We think these are her siblings.
Lyles Bear arrived a few days ago, after his mother was hit by a car. Here he is at UTCVM. Lyles weighs 15.43 pounds and is in good health. His mother was doing a good job.
Lyles was in The Cub House before being transferred to Hartley House.
Slick was rescued about the same day as Lyles, but in a different area. At UTCVM he was found to weigh 22.05 pounds.
Slick was in The Cub House before moving to Hartley House.
After Slick swatted Lyles and Lyles went into Slick’s room to eat his food, the two cubs became friends!
Here they are, sharing a bowl of food.
They have access to the Acclimation Pen and will soon be in a Wild Enclosure.
Just to give you an idea of where some of these cubs come from, this is where Lyles was found. Had he taken off into that landscape it is very doubtful that he could have been found.
We are grateful to all the dedicated wildlife officers who rescue cubs and bring them to ABR.
