Sissy was one of the first tiny cubs to arrive at ABR in March, at the age of 2 months and a weight of 3.2 pounds. She has thrived under the care of ABR, and is now a beautiful, big bear. Remarkably, even though she has not been taught by a mother bear, the instinct to build a den for the winter is obvious as she gathered straw and carried it to her chosen site. She gathered several mouthfuls of straw to line her den, and took care in transporting and placing the straw. In the wild, bears prepare their dens in much the same way, using leaves and grasses to line the cavity in which they will spend the winter.
