The wet night caused the cubs to leave their soggy daybed and retreat to the less soggy platform to sleep.
We can see how the dark, longer guard hairs act to wick water away, while the soft, fluffy undercoat keeps the cubs snug and dry.
We think they would be more comfy in one of the straw-filled culvert dens, but that’s not what bears do.
The big news is that Scruffy achieved “Circularity” as he snoozed. He looks like a big, round ball (a fuzzy one).
Out of the circular shape, Scruffy went to awaken Phoenix.
Nope! Phoenix didn’t move, so Scruffy went down to forage, and Rags started to rip up the firehose bumper.
Caught in the act!
Scruffy came back. Rags made a quick trip down for a snack, and when he returned, Phoenix was blocking the way.
Phoenix moved and changed places with Scruffy so he could rip up the firehose, too.
Phoenix and Scruffy rip away while Rags works on foot grooming.
And so goes the day. There is light snow falling, that shows on the black fur coats, but can’t be seen falling. We can’t help but wonder if these cubs will ever take advantage of the culvert dens. It’s supposed to be colder, with more snow later in the week. Time will tell.
