We have watched the lead-up to the controlled burn of Wild Enclosure #1. That included gathering flammable materials for the burn, and spreading those materials in the enclosure. Yesterday, the curators actually started the burn! They had conferred with experts in the practice of controlled burns, and knew what needed to be done. They had even done a practice run in a corner of the enclosure, and when that went well they were ready to get started. Fortunately, the weather was cooperative. In order for the burn to be successful, the temperature two inches below the surface must be 150 degrees. When the fire was burning, the temperature at that depth was more than 200 degrees, yielding very satisfactory results.
