Black Bears as Ecosystem Engineers in Appalachia - Jon D B naturalist
March 16, 2026 – Eastern Black Bears As Ecosystem Engineers

For a recent Appalachian Bear Rescue Member Education Night, we were graced with the enthusiasm of guest speaker, Naturalist Jon D. B., Director of Communications for TennGreen Land Conservancy. Jon gave some very interesting information about the many ways the eastern black bear contribute to the forest and valley ecosystems of the southern Appalachians.

During the talk (video below), Jon and ABR Executive Director Greg Grieco talk about the magical wonders of bear scat and how it contributes to seed dispersal of nut and fruit trees, and berry bushes – while highlighting habitat management, predation pressure, century trails, and much more!

Recording from Appalachian Bear Rescue’s February Member Education night with guest speaker Naturalist Jon D.B. from TennGreen Land Conservancy. Jon talks about the positive impact eastern black bears have on their environment in the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding areas including seed dispersal, habitat management and predation pressure.

You can join these insightful discussions about all things bears (and other wildlife) by becoming an ABR Member. It is a great way to support us, as well as get some cool “insider” perks! Joining in on these classes and discussions and asking questions live with our experts is just one of many.

Thank you for being an advocate for our black bear and wildlife conservation!
