News Flash! Bear #347 at ABR!

On Wednesday April 6, 2022, ABR welcomed a small yearling bear, #347. A 14-month-old male, he was found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and brought to ABR by park ranger and former ABR curator, Greg Grieco. Because April 6 is National Tartan Day (who knew?) he was nicknamed Tartan.

Tartan Bear went to the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, for the usual examination and prescription for deworming medicine. Tartan weighs 22.4 pounds, which is just about half what he should weigh at his age. He will be housed in the Hartley House for a few days, where he can adjust to eating high quality food and where the curators will be able to monitor him. Here is Tartan Bear!

It’s easy to see that this little bear is underweight.

We are pleased to welcome Tartan Bear to ABR and the Class of 2022, and we will post additional photos and information as they become available.
