It’s Cubby Birthday!

Comments are off

As you may recall, January 22nd is the date that ABR has designated as the “official birthday” of all the cubs and yearlings who come to us for care. This means that today the ten bear cubs are officially yearlings, and our yearling, Bud Bear, is now a two-year-old subadult. As we write this, there are mother bears giving birth to the cubs of 2022, or sleeping in their dens, waiting for those births to take place.

We have a couple of photos from 1999, that show tiny, neonate cubs being fostered to a wild mother bear in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

We don’t know the identity of the human who is introducing a neonate cub into the den of a wild sow. It really doesn’t matter who it was.
Two tiny cubs with a mother bear in her den. One of the cubs may be her biological offspring, and the other one the foster. It’s a cozy, family picture, no matter who is who.

During the next few weeks (as well as the past few weeks) the cubs of 2022 will be born. We hope that they have a good start to their lives, and we wish our former ABR resident bears a very happy birthday and many more!

We have no way of knowing if and when our services will be needed on behalf of a needy yearling or cub. Watch this space!
