Cubby Colors

American Black Bears come with many different colors of fur, much like the different hair colors on humans. Although the cubs at ABR are generally black, we occasionally receive a cub with a reddish or brownish tinge to their fur. Some bears (and cubs) have white markings, called blazes, on their chests. Two of the current ABR cubs have somewhat unusual coloring. Lemon Drop is distinctive because of her light-colored face.

The light muzzle on Lemon Drop is still unusually pale.
In June, when she arrived, Lemon Drop was noted for her light, yellowish face, for which she was named.
Barley Bear had a distinctive little white chest blaze when he arrived in May.
When he was released into Wild Enclosure #3, his white blaze was prominent.
Now, in August, his white markings are even more noticeable. They may well be permanent as he grows.
Today Lemon Drop came to the Cubby Pool.
Barley came to the pool, too.
A bit later, Barley tried to settle himself in a tire on the Tire Bridge.
His friend, Lemon Drop, came by for a visit.
The two cubs sat together, side by side, gazing into the woods.

It’s nice to see cubs being compatible instead of wrestling, for a change. These two look like a picture of contentment.
