“Chubbifying” Bear Cubs

Comments are off

What?  Yes, that’s right – ABR has coined a new word for what the cubs do so well – they “chubbify” – as you can probably guess, it means eat to get chubby.  Today we see all three of the cubs doing a good job of “chubbifying.”

Eliza, Andy and Finnegan Bear are busy eating.  They are all together in the same area.

Andy

When they arrived in June, Andy was smaller than his sister, but not any more.

Andy

Andy has become quite rotund. He is bigger than Eliza now.

Female bears are typically about two-thirds the size of males, so it’s not unexpected that Andy has pulled ahead of Eliza in weight.

Finnegan

Finnegan is the largest of all, due to his enhanced nutrition at ABR.

Finnegan

Finnegan simply plopped down and ate what was nearby.

Andy and Finn

Andy followed Finn’s example and lay down to eat as well.

The curators are watching closely to see when hyperphagia, the frenzy of nonstop eating that hits all bears in late summer to fall, kicks in for them.  Even though they have never been taught nor seen the effects of hyperphagia, their instincts will lead them to experience it.
