Another Yearling Bear!

In the late afternoon on August 15th, a TWRA officer brought yet another yearling bear (ABR #320) to us for care. This time it is a female who weighs about half of what she should for a nearly 19-month-old bear. When taken to the UT College of Veterinary Medicine for her intake exam, she weighed just 37.5 pounds although she was in reasonably good health otherwise. She was surviving, but definitely not thriving, and with the current state of natural food she likely would have continued to lose weight, perhaps even eventually to starve. The UT vets prescribed the usual course of worm meds and the new yearling is currently housed in Acclimation Pen #4. This little girl is nicknamed Dahlia Bear.

Here is our newest yearling – Dahlia Bear.

ABR is now caring for 18 bears – 14 cubs-of-the-year and 4 yearlings. We’re very glad that the facility was expanded a couple of years ago!
