Andy Bear Huffs and Moans

In our last post we told you that Curator Coy had moved to a different location to observe the cubs.  All three of the cubs had gone up a tree as a result.  Today we learned that Andy Bear had another scare, and vocalized in the “anxious bear” way.  He scurried up a tree and then huffed, blew and moaned to show that he was alarmed.  Those sounds are typical of a bear that is nervous or agitated.  If you hear those sounds from a bear when you’re on a trail or in a forest or park, you need to back away slowly to give the animal the space it needs.

When the noise startled him, Andy Bear scurried up the tree for safety.

Andy vocalized by huffing, blowing and moaning to show that he was anxious.

He looked around, still vocalizing, to assess the situation.

Deciding that there was no real threat, Andy climbed down and went back to foraging.  The fright was forgotten in a few minutes.

Back on the ground, Andy went on with the important work of eating.

It’s amazing that our little orphaned cubs have such finely tuned bear behaviors that are completely natural and innate.  Andy, Eliza and Finnegan know just what to do in a scary situation.
