Amazing Adaptations

We thought we would show you a couple of pictures that demonstrate especially unique features of the bears that permit them to be comfortable sleeping outdoors in cold and wet weather.

For example, here are Beignet and Boudreaux on the platform in their enclosure on a recent, wet and cold day.

The outer guard hairs are long and act as a waterproof coat, shedding wetness, while the fluffy underfur keeps the bear warm and dry.
Long, curved claws help bears climb, even on wet surfaces. The extra-long tongue is ideal for scooping insects out of hiding places.

Bears are truly amazing animals. They are well adapted to live in a forested habitat.
