ABR Bear #285!

On March 19th, TWRA rescued a severely underweight, malnourished yearling bear in Townsend. A little female weighing just 9.735 pounds, #285 is nicknamed Sweetie Bear. To put her weight into perspective, a typical three-month-old cub will weigh 8 to 10 pounds. Sweetie Bear is thirteen months old!

These photos were taken just before her rescue.

Sweetie Bear is much too small for her age. She hasn’t been getting enough food.

Sweetie Bear was spotted by a couple from Indiana.

She was transported to the UT College of Veterinary Medicine for her initial exam. This is standard procedure for any bear that comes to ABR.

In the carrier to go to the UTCVM.

These photos show her being examined by the team.

Blood was drawn and she was found to be anemic.

She weighed less than 10 pounds!

Dr. Duval checked her heartbeat.

Sweetie Bear had a thorough exam.

So now ABR has four bears onsite. All of them have had a rough start in life and will require special care, but our curators are up to the task. We’ll look forward to watching their progress. Join us!
